Pattern

Notes:

This pattern is worked in continuous rounds. Do not join at the end of each round.

Begin with a magic circle. Alternately, you may ch 2 and work Round 1 into the second chain from the hook (beginner-friendly method).

Color changes: When a color change is noted in the pattern, change color in the last stitch of the round.

Insert hook into the final stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop. Yarn over with the new color and pull through both loops on the hook to complete the stitch. Continue with the new color.

Stitch counts for each round are provided in parentheses.

Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round, moving it up each round to track the beginning.

Football

Start with brown.

Round 1: 6 sc into magic circle (6)

Round 2: inc in each stitch (12)

Round 3: 1 sc in each stitch (12) Change to white.

Round 4: (1 sc + inc) x6 (18)

Round 5: 1 sc in each stitch (18) Change to brown.

Round 6: (1 sc in next 2 stitches + inc) x6 (24)

Rounds 7-14: 1 sc in each stitch (24) Change to white.

Begin stuffing and continue to stuff as you go.

Round 15: (1 sc in next 2 stitches + dec) x6 (18)

Round 16: 1 sc in each stitch (18) Change to brown.

Round 17: (1 sc + dec) x6 (12)

Round 18: 1 sc in each stitch (12)

Round 19: (dec) x6 (6)

Finish stuffing before closing. Fasten off,  leaving a long tail for sewing.

Using a tapestry needle, sew the remaining stitches closed.

Finishing

  • Embroidery details: Using white yarn, embroider the laces across the center of the football.
  • Attach keychain hardware: Attach keychain hardware by threading the O-ring through rounds 18 and 19 of the football and securing it in place. Add optional swivel clasp if desired.
